MATA's Half-Fare Program and Poilcy
Half Fare During Non-Peak Hours
As required by the Federal Transit Administration,
MATA offers a non-peak fare for elderly persons and persons with
disabilities that is no greater than one-half of the fare generally applicable
to others during peak periods. MATA's current reduced fare is $.75 or a 21-ride
pass is available for only $12.00. The
pass is only good during the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The reduced fare is only good during the hours
of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Half
Fare for Persons with a Medicare Card
The
half-fare requirements of the Federal Transit Act apply to any person
presenting a Medicare card duly issued to that person pursuant to Title II or
XVIII of the Social Security Act.
Persons with disabilities
are defined by FTA as persons "who by reason of illness, injury, age,
congenital malfunction, or other incapacity or temporary or permanent
disability (including any individual who is a wheelchair user or has
semi-ambulatory capabilities), cannot use effectively, without special
facilities, planning, or design, mass transportation service or a mass
transportation facility."
MATA's
half fare program, as applied, requires passengers to show proof of eligibility
when they pay their fare in order to receive the half fare. MATA accepts
only a special identification card issued by MATA. If an individual
presents a Medicare card along with one other form of identification, the
half-fare card will be issued immediately.
MATA requires eligible
passengers to have a special identification card as the sole basis for
obtaining the half fare. MATA accepts a valid Medicare card as sufficient
identification for obtaining such a reduced fare card. To
clearly ensure that the person presenting a Medicare card is the
authorized individual, MATA does request for additional proof of identity (i.e.
another card with a photograph). There is no specific prohibition against this
and MATA is only checking the validity of the Medicare card.
If
the individual does not have a Medicare card, the individual must provide the
name and address of a physician or medical professional that will confirm and
indicate the nature of the applicant's disability. In addition, the
medical professional must advise of the duration of the disability.
Obtaining
this special card is relatively easy. The location(s) for obtaining the
special identification card is accessible by transit, open during
convenient hours, and publicized. Individuals may apply at MATA's North End
Terminal located at 444 N. Main or American Way Transit Center located at 3921
American Way.
The
card is valid for a one-year or two-year period. MATA recommends customers to reapply at least
six weeks before the expiration month to avoid disruption. The customer is responsible for card
renewals. Transit operators will collect
expired cards.
Half-Fare for seniors 65 Years or Older
For
persons 65 years of age or older, MATA requires more than one form of
identification for determining age, therefore two forms of identification are
requested.
MATA's fee to provide special identification cards
is $3.00 and $5.00 for replacements.
