MATA has begun a program of technology improvements that will increase the efficiency of service delivery to passengers and upgrade our in-house operations and management capabilities. This program will be implemented in phases over the next few years.
The one critical element of the program is an Automatic Vehicle Location system, based on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. AVL, which will be implemented in the first phase, will allow MATA to track the exact location of all of its buses, paratransit vehicles and trolleys at all times. It will also provide the capability for, or work in conjunction with, several other elements of the program.
The first phase is expected to begin implementation in 2009 and will include:
• Automatic Vehicle Location/Computer-Aided Dispatching system
• On-board security cameras
• On-board automatic voice annunciation system for announcement of stops
• On-board automatic passenger counters
• On-board automatic vehicle diagnostics (Vehicle Health Monitoring)
• Radio communication system (replacement)
The second phase will follow, as funding becomes available, and will include:
• Electronic bus arrival time displays (in real time)
• Interactive voice response for phone system
• Ticket vending machines
Riders should begin to see the benefits of the first phase by early 2010.
