Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is committed to providing public transportation services in a safe and cost-effective manner. This mission cannot be fulfilled unless safety is an integral part of our environment, our lives and our workplace. To assist in providing a safe and healthful work environment for employees, customers, and visitors, the company has established a workplace safety program. This program is a top priority for the company. Its success depends on the alertness and personal commitment of all.
The company provides information to employees about workplace safety and health issues through regular internal communication channels such as supervisor-employee meetings, bulletin board postings, memos, digital content and or other written communications.
MATA is subject to emergencies and disasters that can threaten a safe and secure environment for travel. Experience has shown that responding to such emergencies is one of the most difficult and complex tasks performed in the transit environment.
The Federal Transit Authority (FTA) has issued a General Directive #24-1 to address the significant and continuing safety risk associated with assaults on transit workers. The FTA has identified a national-level hazard that transit workers must interact with the public and, at times, must clarify or enforce agency policies, which can present a risk of transit workers being assaulted on transit vehicles and in revenue facilities.
IMMEDIATE ACTION CONSIDERATIONS
In the event that an employee at MATA encounters a threatening passenger with or without a weapon, it is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals involved. Here are some immediate actions to consider in mitigating the situation:
- Stay calm and composed. It’s crucial to remain calm and composed in such situations to think clearly and make the best decisions.
- Ensure personal safety. The safety of employees is the top priority. If you feel threatened or in immediate danger, find a way to distance yourself from the situation while alerting authorities, the on-duty supervisor and MATA Communications.
- Pull over to a safe location, turn your emergency flashers on and open all doors to allow yourself and passengers to exit.
- Assist passengers. If possible, guide passengers to safety or provide instructions on what they should do. Encourage them to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities.
- Do not confront the individual. It is essential not to confront or engage with the individual directly, as this could easily escalate the situation further. Always allow first responders to handle the scene and incident.
